Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a wonder goal to smooth Everton’s passage into the group stage of the Europa League. In a difficult atmosphere, the Blues had to come from behind to draw 1-1 with Hajduk Split and secure a 3-1 aggregate victory. Player ratings are listed below.
Jordan Pickford ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (all ratings out of five)
A penalty save to go with a fantastic fingertip stop in the first half, Pickford was outstanding and could do little to stop Hajduk’s very own stupendous goal. He was however lucky to survive conceding a penalty in the first half when an incorrect linesman’s flag saved him from a possible red card.
Leighton Baines ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Baines has made a great start to the season. He looks fit and energetic and in Croatia he used all his experience to control the game on the left.
Michael Keane ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Strong and solid, another comfortable display on the day he received a call up to the England squad.
Ashley Williams ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A good performance from the Wales captain. Conceded a penalty but defended well and made a couple of crucial blocks to keep Hajduk at bay.
Cuco Martina ⭐️⭐️
Got forward well in the first half but was caught out defensively.
Muhamed Besic ⭐️⭐️
First start since returning from his ACL injury that kept him out for over 12 months. He isn’t as effective as Idrissa Gueye but played well enough to show he has a value as a squad player.
Morgan Schniederlin ⭐️⭐️⭐️
His presence in midfield ensured Everton’s place in the Europa League was never seriously under threat. He will be missed against Chelsea at the weekend.
Ademola Lookman ⭐️⭐️
The former Charlton man didn’t make it past half time. Struggled in the intimidating atmosphere but will learn from the experience as he goes on to become a top player.
Gylfi Sigurdsson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The clubs record signing scored a spectacular goal, finishing from 55yards to equalise on the night. The former Swansea man showed how quickly he has settled on Merseyside and linked well with Rooney in particular.
Wayne Rooney ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another impressive performance from Rooney. Will be disappointed not to score, had at least three good chances, but his endless running was a constant threat.
Dominic Calvert Lewin ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Played out of position but played very well. He out paced his full back on several occasions and looked lively throughout. He is continuing to grow in stature but will be disappointed that he failed to score when well placed.
Aaron Lennon ⭐️⭐️
Will be pleased to be back involved with the first team. Lacked a little bit of sharpness but brought an element of control to the Everton right.
Tom Davies ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Didn’t have long to impress but was good in possession and helped quieten the Croatians in the final 20 minutes.
