Jordan Pickford ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
Fee: £25m raising to £30m
Former Club: Sunderland
As he was a surprising omission from the starting line-up in the first leg of our Europa League qualifying tie against Ruzomberok we have only had a relatively short time to assess our most expensive summer signing. The early signs however are very encouraging. Goalkeeper Pickford had relatively little do to, but he comfortably dealt with the threatening set piece delivery from the Slovakians.
The former Sunderland stopper showed a good pair of hands, collecting a couple of crosses comfortably. His greatest quality on the night was his assertiveness and ability to organise the back three. For someone so young (23) and inexperienced (only 31 Premier League appearances) he was assured and happy to direct senior defenders in Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams. For the first time in well over a decade, Everton have a goalkeeper in total command of his penalty area.
Since signing we have heard a lot about his quick delivery and he certainly looked to release Everton’s forward players with long accurate kicks. Unfortunately on the night Everton’s forward players were often isolated and this meant his distribution came to very little, however this will become a very useful attacking weapon for the Blues, especially away from home when Everton look to play more on the counter.
Very early days, but Everton have a goalkeeper to be proud of. He will surely be number one when Stoke come to Goodison for the opening fixture of the new Premier League season and will be Everton’s goalkeeper for many years to come.
