St Dom-index Player Ratings for the Everton vs Norwich City game on Saturday 11th January 2014.
Alex Jones is back with his match ratings and puts Gareth Barry forward as man of the match. Several others played well, including Howard, Baines and Mirallas. Do you agree with Alex’s choice as man of the match?
Tim Howard – 8
A solid performance and made a couple of brilliant save to keep a clean sheet.
Seamus Coleman – 7
Had a good game, but was unusually quiet when we were attacking. However when Nathan Redmond was brought on he caused Coleman a few problems and took it past him on several occasions putting a dangerous ball into the box.
John Stones – 7
Once again looked very comfortable on the ball, and despite the few mistakes he made he was able to carry on playing with confidence. However these mistakes do need to be ironed out of his game as against a better team the mistakes could result in a goal.
Phil Jagielka – 7
Beat Hooper to every header and on a few occasions put in a crucial block or a crucial header to deny Norwich a goal. Also I would like to give a mention to the fact that 3 of our back 4 made it into the premier league team of the year.
Leighton Baines – 8
Was back to his normal self again. Was very dangerous when attacking and linked up with Pienaar very well. He was given a lot of space down the left hand side and played in some brilliant crosses that weren’t finished by anyone.
Kevin Mirallas – 8
Kevins performances have improved over the last few weeks and today he put in another good performance and topped it off with a brilliant free kick. He looked very dangerous going forward and on one occasion put in a brilliant ball from the left wing and Lukaku narrowly missed the target from a yard out.
James McCarthy – 7
Controlled the midfield, everything we did went through him and also he defended very well. It’s good to see him develop so much as a player. When he first joined he was very defensive minded but now he fits into our playing style perfectly and is able to attack very well too.
Leon Osman – 7
Had a very good game and was always willing to receive the ball. His quick feet really help us when we are attacking. We like to pass the ball around the defense so when Leon makes space for a pass he’s able to use his quick feet and good body movement to turn his marker and take their whole midfield out the equation. This is especially effective when we are playing 3 up front as he has more options.
***Gareth Barry – 8.5 MAN OF THE MATCH***
Defended very well and some of his passes out to the wide men are brilliant. His goal was very good, and from my seat you could see the ball swerve right into the top corner.
Steven Pienaar – 7
Again very similar to Osman, was always willing to receive the ball and was able to take a player on.
Romelu Lukaku -7
Looked a lot sharper after his week off, he was able to win most of the headers and also hold the ball up very well. Was disappointed that he didn’t get that goal, but I think he’s now looking a lot more like himself and I can see him scoring against West Brom.
Steven Naismith – 7
Looked good in spells and as always was good in the air, but I think if we want to progress as a club then possibly Steven needs replacing.
Johnny Heitinga – 7
Was very comfortable when he came on and put a good performance in, I think he will still leave as Martinez has made it clear that he isn’t even 4th pick centre back.
