The Blue Match Review

What a brilliant result and for the first time in 11 years Everton have gone away from home to beat one of the traditional top four.

A lot of Everton fans went into the game thinking we could win, however before the game that was seen by many neutral observers as very optimistic. I think Martinez deserves a great deal of credit for the result, you could see by the team he fielded and the overall style of play that we were going to Old Trafford in search of a win. Without wanting to show any disrespect to Moyes, when we played against any of the premier league ‘giants’ under his leadership we would always start with a defensive minded team with the aim of playing for a draw.

On reflection the game could have gone either way, both teams had several chances and United had excellent opportunities to score, in particular Rooney’s deflected shot which hit Tim Howard’s upright and Danny Welbeck hitting the crossbar when presented with an open goal from little more than two yards out. However we also had our chances including a free kick from Mirallas that ricocheted off the post.

The goal, which arrived late in the game, may have had a stroke of luck about it, with Lukaku miss hitting his shot which rolled across the goal and fell nicely for Oviedo who calmly fired home, but it was richly deserved.

This win sees us remain in fifth place on the same amount of points as Liverpool and only three points behind Chelsea in second.

So with lots of positives we head to Arsenal at the weekend looking for another 3 points. 6 points out of these two games would be a massive fillip and I believe would give us a very good chance of getting into Europe.
