Back in 1985, exactly 28 years ago to the day, Howard Kendall’s Everton were also one-nil winners over Manchester United. Unbelievably that goal was also scored in the 85th minute, with Frank Stapleton scoring a late own goal to give the Blues a home victory over Manchester United in the Screen Sport Super Cup. The victory pushed the Blues to almost certain qualification and a potential Semi Final clash with Tottenham or Liverpool.
The Daily Express provided a brief report on the game, with just over 20,000 in attendance at Goodison Park.
Frank Stapleton, without a goal in 16 games for United, broke his barren spell at Goodison last night and gave Everton a Screen Sport Super Cup victory.
Stapleton, pressed into emergency defensive service because of United’s growing injury crisis, hooked the ball into his own net in the 85th minute, trying to clear after ‘keeper Chris Turner had lost out in a challenge with Gary Lineker.
