Everton in the 80s – TV Blackout keeps the Champions off the screen

Welcome to our new regular feature tracking Everton in the 1980s. Our latest contributor is Daniel Wood, author of the @Footballint80s Twitter account. Daniel will be posting regular updates from this day in 1985. This retro look at Everton and 80s football in general is sure to bring back some fantastic memories.


12 Nov 85: Everton are hoping all their players come through tomorrow’s internationals unscathed as they travel to Portman Road on Saturday to visit Ipswich, who lie 2nd bottom in the 1st Div.

12 Nov 85: Still no football on television. After lengthy talks 1st and 2nd Div chairmen reject the latest package for football to be shown on TV.

12 Nov 85: There has been no domestic football on TV this season other than the Charity Shield where Everton beat Man Utd. (See YouTube video below)

12 Nov 85: The chairmen did however agree to press on with plans for a new Super League.
