Preview: Austria Vienna

Everton return to match action on Sunday with the first pre-season fixture of the season and the first every game under the management of Roberto Martinez. The opposition will be provided by current champions of the Austrian Bundesliga, Austria Vienna and promises to be a challenging encounter, with the Blues opponents already three weeks into their pre-season preparations.

A large contingent of Evertonians are expected in the Austrian capital for the game at the 12,000 capacity Generali Arena (previously known as the Franz Horr Stadium), with the Blues support eagerly awaiting to see the tactics employed by Roberto Martinez. For those unable to make the journey to mainland Europe, the game is available via evertontv, with a small subscription payable to enjoy all the pre-season action.

Martinez has a relatively strong squad available for this stage of the season, with the majority of the travelling squad expected to see some action over the 90 minutes. Alongside the number of youngster eager to make a name for themselves, Everton have a core of internationals on the trip and will in all likelihood start with a high quality XI. New signings Joel and Alcaraz will feature in-goal and at centre back respectively, but fellow new boys Kone and Deulofeu are yet to join up with the Blues.

Squad: Joel, Springthorpe; Hibbert, Browning, Baines, Oviedo, Jagielka, Distin, Alcaraz, Duffy; Gibson, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar, Mirallas, Gueye, Grant, Junior, Kennedy; Naismith, Anichebe, Vellios, McAleny.

Everton have never previously played against Austria Vienna and have only once played a competitive game against Austrian opposition, beating city rivals Rapid Vienna in one of the most famous nights in the clubs history, as the Blues lifted the European Cup Winner Cup.

Footage of that famous night in Rotterdam is available below.
