Everton & Spurs linked with Barca wonder kid, but who is Deulofeu

Everton have been heavily linked with a loan move for Barcelona and Spain wonder kid Gerard Deulofeu, with the Blues reportedly competing with Tottenham for the signature of the highly coveted Spanish u21 international. Like many Blues, we know very little of Deulofeu, but have trawled the internet to bring you up to speed with the latest possible summer addition.

Gerard-Deulofeu

Born in Catalonia in March 1994, Deulofeu was destined to play for Barcelona and signed for the Spanish giants, aged just 9 years old. After progressing through the ranks, he made his debut for the Barcelona B side as a 16-year-old, playing against Cordoba in the Spanish Second Division as a second half substitute. The following season, the young Spaniard made a significant impact for the Barca B team, scoring 9 goals in just 34 appearances, an impressive total for an inexperienced winger. That same year he made his debut for Barcelona, playing in the Copa del Rey and appearing as a substitute in the Champions League.

The right footed player has stared primarily on the right-wing, but has occasionally switched to a more central striking role. His main attributes are his pace and dribbling ability, both of which are perfectly highlighted in the YouTube video at the foot of this post. He has certainly developed an eye for goal, with a total of 27 goals in 68 appearances for the Barcelona B team.

His impact has captured the imagination of the Spanish public and he is one of the stars of the u20 team currently competing in the u20 World Cup in Turkey. He has scored two goals so far in the tournament, helping Spain progress to the Quarter Final stage, where they will take on Uruguay on Saturday evening.

His progress has been so impressive that Barcelona secured the young Deulofeu on a 4 year contract in May of this year. Barcelona are open to a loan switch to further his progression and the two clubs in mind are Everton and Tottenham. Several media outlets are suggesting Everton are the front-runners as he is more likely to feature for the Blues, with Spurs’ significantly larger squad likely to limit his opportunities.
